Top 5 Inspirational Buildings
“Good Architecture is like a good therapy session, a good marriage, a good poem – gently and almost invisibly allowing you to be you, as flawed and as beautiful as you are.”
This quote highlights the powerful way in which an inspirational building (as with all art) can reveal something of your own soul. By emotionally connecting with a structure or space, you are forever changed. You are more you. You become.
There are so many buildings that inspire me in different ways. However, the ones that top my list today are some of those that I've been fortunate enough to have travelled to and experienced in real life.
La Sagrada Famiglia, Barcelona
“Nothing is art if it does not come from nature.”
This basilica is an (as yet) unfinished labour of love. Gaudi honoured God by reflecting natural forms in his design. The facades of La Sagrada Famiglia are based on the golden ratio, which occurs organically in the natural world.
Each of the facades (Nativity, Passion and Glory) is distinctive, striking and beautiful. However, for me, it is the interior of the basilica that I find truly moving. The stunning and unique stained glass windows (especially when viewed at sunset), give voice to natural light, illuminating the tree-trunk supporting columns. Inside, nature is almost singing, exalting in its very existence.
The Dancing House, Prague
Nicknamed 'Fred and Ginger', the Nationale-Nederlanden building in Prague was designed by Vlado Milunić in cooperation with Frank Gehry. The 'new-baroque' style was controversial in the 1990s when it was built, because it is so distinct from the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings which surround it. I love it for its sense of humour and mischievous rebellion. Like a defiant teenage punk, it refuses to conform with the neighbouring styles.
St Paul's Cathedral, London
A quintessential symbol of Britishness, Sir Christopher Wren's St Paul's Cathedral is an iconic and awe-inspiring part of the London skyline. The magnificent dome survived the blitz and for me symbolises Londoners' fortitude and resilience through tough times. The sight of it is always uplifting!
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia
This futuristic yet organic structure, designed by Santiago Calatrava is a venue for ballet, opera, theatre, film and music. A truly interactive space, the building and its surrounding reflective pools and gardens symbolise our act of observing the world. It was an absolute pleasure to stroll around while contemplating modern Valencia (and enjoying an ice lolly).
Castle Neuschwanstein, Bavaria
This is a truly romantic and majestic fairytale castle. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat, in honour of Richard Wagner. Visiting Castle Neuschwanstein is like stepping back in time. Perched on top of a forest-covered hill, with its towering turrets, the imposing structure looks almost unreal. It's therefore exactly the kind of castle that I imagine Cinderella arriving at in her pumpkin coach to attend the prince's ball. And honestly, who doesn't daydream about being a prince or princess sometimes (I certainly do)?
Inspirational buildings honourable mentions:
Finally, these are two inspirational buildings that I've never been to, but are definitely on my bucket list!
Oriental Pearl Tower
This building is a radio and TV tower, designed by Jiang Huan Chen, Lin Benlin, and Zhang Xiulin. It is the third tallest structure in Shanghai. The tower manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time. To me it looks like it's straight out of Orbit City in The Jetsons!
Lotus Temple, New Dehli
The lotus temple was designed by Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba. It is free for all to enter and worship. The temple is not affiliated to any God or religion, but instead celebrates the spiritual unity of all humankind. To me the lotus flower symbolises an open mind and heart. The temple represents acceptance of and respect for others.
